After four years in my house I have decided to get off my butt and toss some money into the barren theater. I bought my projector (BenQ HT2050) yesterday so now it is time for an AVR. I currently have a Denon AVR 2112CI in my living room that I am pleased with. Because of that positive experience I think I want to stick with Denon. For the theater though, I want more HDMI capabilities and the updated features of a newer AVR.
This is where I ramble because I am not an audiophile. I just want my movies to sound amazing. There will be some gaming as well, but movies will be the primary purpose. I like the features of the 2300. I am even happy to see that it has dual sub outputs. Because the room is relatively small, I may be able to better work with two smaller subs rather that one large sub. The room is about 2300 cubic feet and because it is so small I can't see me ever going 7.1. Please correct me if I am wrong in this assumption. The room is shown below in a couple images. If I step up to the 3300 I know that Audessy gets an improvement, and that it would likely sound a little better. I am just not convinced that it is worth the extra cash for my purpose. So there it is, all I know to say/ask. Can you guys let me know what you think? Are there things I am not considering? Right now, I can get the Denon for $600 and that seems like a great deal. Stepping up to the 3300 would cost me $400 more.

1. Cheapest price I could find for the 2300 is $600. A good ebay seller has the 3300 for $700 fairly often (currently OOS but getting more today).
2. No pre-outs for future expansion or more Atmos speakers 3. Only Audyssey MultEQ XT (3300 has XT32, something like 4x the number of filters) 4. If you don't need 8 HDMI ports, Costco has a great deal on the TSR-7810 and Amazon has the Pioneer VSX-1131 super cheap now too

Will have to check Ebay. I see a seller has them listed for $768. Do you know the seller name that has them for $700?

You need to be careful when purchasing. The manufacturer's warranty will only be honored if you purchase the equipment from an authorized reseller. Authorized resellers are only allowed to publish the list price, but will quote a much lower price if you call them on the phone. (Crutchfield and Best Buy won't, though.) One of the popular internet resellers is AV Science. (Just to confuse things, AV Science is no longer affiliated with AVSforum.) Several of their sales reps post regularly on this forum, including jdsmoothieDisclaimer: I've never bought anything from AV Science. I normally get my A/V equipment from a locally owned brick--and-mortar reseller (not Best Buy).

If I was to get the 3300 I would be essentially paying a lot of extra money for the upgraded Audessy. Am I really even going to notice the difference in sound if I have no intention of spending $10k for speakers?

If anything, it'll help less expensive speakers more than it would the more expensive ones Another difference which has bitten some people is how the HDMI outputs work. The 3300 has dual Zone 1 Monitor outputs, intended for use in a situation where there's both a TV and a projector in the same room. The 2300 has separate Zone 1 and Zone 2 HDMI outputs.

This room will only ever have a projector so I don't think that would affect me.

Actually you have that backwards.1. x2300 has Monitor 1 and Monitor 2 outputs that mirror a single HDMI source 2. x3300 has Main Zone and Zone 2 outputs which can be separate HDMI sources. I've owned both and still have the x3300.

RamHemiTX,
I'm guessing by your user name you live somewhere in TX? If you'r near Dallas or Houston Fry's has the x2300 on sale thru Saturday with a promo code. Way better pricing than you've been mentioning.

Also since you mentioned you want two subs, having two separate sub outs on AVR is a definite bonus unless you want to invest in something like miniDSP.

Audyssey XT32 alone is worth it going for a X3300W, the sound is so much better with the XT version. In my case the XT version just didn't work out at all (probably to my small room and all the speakers plus dual subwoofers), but with XT32, I am VERY happy with the result.

Do you know what that code is? They have the 3200 at $599 which is last years model and doesn't have the Audessy Multi EQ 32 I do not believe. So that probably isn't any better than the 2300.

That sucks on the front panel inputs, but it would be covered by the warranty. I agree on the smartphone app, I use it on my 2112CI and it does indeed suck. Valid points.

Here is my code for today you can have 191980, I just tried it is working for the 2300 $399 model and the pioneer elite sc 91 $499. Check craigslist someone might post a x3300w for about the same price as on black Friday, 479+tax= 522 dollar. I just picked one up yesterday for 550 from a guy in Houston.

I got my 4100 from them as a refurb and never had a single issue. Just a thought.

is there anything you need to do to calibrate and use xt32 other than just to run the standard calibration it walks you through? nothing needing to turn on?

That depends on a couple of things, first, do you use a good way to mount the mic (ie. good mic boom that is decoupled of the floor to avoid vibration from the floor to the mic) and how big/small your room is. I got a pretty small room and sit pretty close to the speakers. That is why I use the flat audyssey curve, but if you have a pretty large room and sit relatively far from the speakers, you should definitely use the reference curve. Other than that, if you don't like the sound coming from your calibration/settings, then you should dig in more!

If you haven't already done so, please take the time to look through the Audyssey 101/FAQ. It will help you to get a good calibration. The instructions in the receivers' owners manuals are pathetically inadequate.

The reason I'm wondering is with the dual outputs, I'm wondering if this could be useful when using different TV picture settings for different types of inputs (for example, TV game mode for PS4/console vs whatever settings you're using for cable, BD player, etc). With the LG TV I have, in order to get appropriate gaming settings you associate a chosen HDMI input as a game console and then set picture mode to Game.1. x2300 has Monitor 1 and Monitor 2 outputs that mirror a single HDMI source 2. x3300 has Main Zone and Zone 2 outputs which can be separate HDMI sources. I've owned both and still have the x3300. Microsoft Remote App For MacIt would be nice to be able to connect both receiver HDMI outputs to different TV inputs in such a way that you can setup the appropriate inputs to use each output, and configure the TV picture settings best for each set (mainly consoles like PS3/PS4, and then everything else). Or in practice do you just have to change your TV settings manually depending on what you're doing with most/all receivers?

I dunno the answer to that. I'm not a gamer at all and never change my TV settings.

On the x3300 you select which HDMI sources go to the main zone or Zone 2 with the remote. I'm constantly flipping back and forth between Blu Ray, DirecTV, Roku, and Chromecast between TV sets. For instance I was watching Better Call Saul on main TV while streaming the baseball game on Roku. You can watch same source on both TV's or independent sources.I've never calibrated video settings for each input though, but I'm not a gamer as I said earlier so really no need.

I'm currently looking at the X3300 -- I'm at that stage where I'm drooling over a downloaded copy of the manual. We've all been there, I'm sure! I've got a query about the two HDMI outputs. I'm hoping to use one for the TV and another to use with an Ambilight clone I'm building. It sounds like the X3300 doesn't mirror port 1's output on port 2. However, port 2 can be set to the same source as port 1. So, is it the case that I can indeed use port 2 with my Ambilight clone, but I'd have to set the source for both ports manually, rather than simply set a 'mirror' option? This wouldn't be too bad -- I've got a Harmony remote that can take care of setting that for me when changing input. .. or is there a wrinkle I've not noticed? (it'd be a shame if it can't do what I'm after.. the X3300 seems great for me in every other way! Upgrading from an old Yamaha RX-V350, so I'm thoroughly impressed at what AVRs do these days!)
